5 reasons home bakers are not getting orders and where to start to get clients with a photo of two simple beautiful wedding cakes

If you’re a baker or decorator staring at your inbox wondering “Why isn’t anyone ordering?” — you’re not alone.

This is one of the most common frustrations I hear from bakers. You know your work is good. You’re posting. You’re showing up. But the orders? Crickets.

The good news: this usually isn’t about talent or effort. It’s about a few fixable gaps in your business.

Let’s walk through the most common reasons you’re not getting orders — and where to start.

1. People Can’t Find You (The #1 Issue)

This is the biggest one. And yes, it deserves to be first.

If someone wants what you sell but can’t easily figure out:

  • who you are

  • what you offer

  • how to contact you

…you don’t exist to them.

You need to leave a clear trail so potential customers can find you — whether that’s through Google, social media, word of mouth, or referrals.

If you’re struggling with orders, start here:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Are you easy to find?
๐Ÿ‘‰ Is it obvious what you do?
๐Ÿ‘‰ Is it clear how to order?

Before fixing anything else, make yourself findable.

2. Your Product Isn’t Quite Right (Yet)

Sometimes the issue isn’t marketing — it’s the product itself.

This can show up in a few ways:

  • Your skills as a baker or decorator still need practice

  • The product doesn’t quite meet customer expectations

  • It’s not the right product for your target market

This isn’t a failure — it’s part of the process.

Every successful baker has gone through a phase of refining their products. Pay attention to feedback. Look at what actually sells in your market, not just what you enjoy making.

3. Your Price Doesn’t Match the Value

Price is never just about numbers — it’s about perceived value.

If the value your product communicates doesn’t match the price:

  • Customers hesitate

  • They don’t buy

  • Or they quietly move on

And here’s the important part:
A price that’s too low can be just as damaging as one that’s too high.

Low prices can signal low quality, inexperience, or uncertainty — even if your work is solid.

Your pricing should make sense for your market and clearly align with the experience and quality you’re offering.

4. Your Brand Needs Development

Sometimes the product and the price are actually fine… but the message isn’t landing.

Your brand helps people trust you as a business.

That includes:

  • Your look and feel

  • Your photos

  • Your messaging

  • The overall experience of interacting with you

You don’t need perfection — but you do need consistency and clarity. A small brand refresh can go a long way in helping customers feel confident saying yes.

5. Your Order Process Is Too Complicated

Ever walked into a restaurant and felt instantly confused?

Customers feel the same way when ordering feels unclear or slow.

Here’s the rule:
Confused customers don’t buy.

If it takes too long to:

  • figure out pricing

  • understand next steps

  • get a response

…people ghost. Not because they’re rude — but because friction kills conversions.

Make the path to ordering simple, clear, and direct.

Where to Start If You’re Stuck

If orders are slow, don’t try to fix everything at once.

Start here:

  1. Make yourself as findable as possible

  2. Work backward through the other four areas

  3. Ask a trusted friend to look at your business with fresh eyes

  4. Identify gaps and fix them one step at a time

Progress beats perfection every single time.
